The Rob’s Grammy Nominees Thoughts and Expectations

Yesterday the Grammy Committee announced the nominees for next year’s show.  Kat and I discussed some of the major awards on the air this morning.  In general, I was very pleasantly surprised with how the Committee did this year representing the music consumer.  Here is a list of some of the most relevant categories, along with my thoughts and expectations on them:

Record of the Year:

“Rolling in the Deep,” Adele

“Holocene,” Bon Iver

“Grenade,” Bruno Mars

“The Cave,” Mumford & Sons

“Firework,” Katy Perry

Of these five songs, I preferred “Firework,” although I expect Adele to pick this one up.  Personally, I think Nicki Minaj’s “Super Bass” was the best song this year.

Album of the Year:

“21,” Adele

“Wasting Light,” Foo Fighters

“Born This Way,” Lady Gaga

“Doo-Wops & Hooligans,” Bruno Mars

“Loud,” Rihanna.

I have all of these albums, but I have not yet listened to “Wasting Light.”  I actually didn’t like “21,” despite liking the two singles from it, although I expect it to win this category.  I would vote for “Loud,” but my favorite album this year was Kanye West’s “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.”

New Artist:

The Band Perry

Bon Iver

J. Cole

Nicki Minaj

Skrillex.

This category absolutely SHOULD be a no-brainer!  It should be a 100% vote for Nicki, although it wouldn’t surprise me if for some reason Skrillex or Bon Iver rob her.  Award shows ALWAYS seem to screw up Best New Artist.

Pop Vocal Album:

“21,” Adele

“The Lady Killer,” Cee Lo Green

“Born This Way,” Lady Gaga

“Doo-Wops & Hooligans,” Bruno Mars

“Loud,” Rihanna.

As far as vocal performances go, Adele’s got this one on lock.

Rap Album:

“Watch the Throne,” Jay-Z and Kanye West

“Tha Carter IV,” Lil Wayne

“Lasers,” Lupe Fiasco

“Pink Friday,” Nicki Minaj

“My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy,” Kanye West.

THIS should be the nominees for Album of the Year!  These are certainly the five best albums in rap this year, and to be honest, the only one that would disappoint me if it won would be “Tha Carter IV.”  I love Lil Wayne, but every other album nominated is better in my opinion.  I have listened to all of these albums multiple times, and if I HAD to choose, I think Kanye had the best album all year in any category.  But Nicki, Lupe, and “Watch the Throne” are very award worthy.
