News 25 meteorologist Scott Dimmich reports that a excessive heat warning is in effect for the entire tri-state area today and a heat advisory is in effect tomorrow.
Obviously what this means is that it will just be stupid hot with the temperature hitting the high 90's and the heat index touching anywhere between 100-120 degrees.
Needless to say, but if you don't need to be outdoors for an extended periods of time, don't be. However, that's impossible for many people whose jobs require being outside. In the event that you absolutely MUST be outdoors today, keep these tips in mind:
The Evansville Environmental Protection Agency along with the Vanderburgh County Health Department have issued another ozone alert for the Evansville area on Sunday. Excessive ozone levels can cause throat and lung irritation, shortness of breath, and increased frequency of asthma attacks in children and people with respiratory diseases.
The Vanderburgh County Health Department also advises you refrain from certain activities during an ozone alert.
Years ago, my wife and I were at the Hard Rock restaurant in Orlando, FL and while waiting for a table, we ordered a drink at the bar. The bartender did his job and asked for ID. However when he saw our Indiana driver's licenses, he asked, "Did you guys ride your tractors down here?" Since we were in Florida, I wanted to reply with, "Are you here legally?" But I didn't, I bit my tongue and drank my beer.
Being an Evansville resident since the day I was born (West Side! Represent!), I know the stigma placed on us by the rest of the nation based solely on our location on Earth (which we obviously have no control over).
The Evansville Courier-Press reports that an ozone alert remains in effect for the Evansville area today.
What does this mean for you? Nothing if you don't have asthma or some other respiratory issues. If you do, or know someone who does, then you (or they) may find that the frequency of asthma attacks increase along with lung and throat irritation.
The Vanderburgh County Department of Health website offers suggestions on what you can do to help keep the ozone levels down.
You may or may not be familiar with who or what the Westboro Baptist Church is. If you are not, they are an organization based out of Kansas that have recieved national news coverage for their presence and picketing of military funerals
If you haven't heard The Rob rake me over the coals yet... I am getting married, and that has got me thinking about where I WANT to get married. Nothing mundane. Nothing boring. It has to be unique! It has to be awesome! So where? Well, that's where the early 20th century landmark comes into play
With the summer months approaching (and the heat already here), Tri-Staters love to get out and enjoy the great outdoors. Barbecues, vacations, sporting events and everything else under the sun can be done with blue skies above us. The only bad thing about summer (according to some) is the heat and how to cope with it. One way is find a good place to swim. With Evansville being called “the river city,” you may think the river would be a surefire place to swim. You can swim in the Ohio river, however you do have a few things to worry about such as currents, hidden things under the water such as logs and, of course, boat traffic on the river. I don’t think you want to be practicing your breast stroke in oncoming barge traffic! Though we don’t have a beach easily accessible in Evansville, there are still plenty of places to go for a swim in and around the city. In no particular order are our top five places to go swimming.
Something that you may not have realized, or even considered for a second, is that just because it's summer, doesn't mean that you don't still have to stop for a stopped school bus. It had not occurred to me that some students may be attending summer school, and summer school means school buses running routes
The Evansville Courier and Press reports that an Ozone alert is in full effect today in the tri-state. METS starting offering free rides due to the ozone alert, which the ridership rose up 30 percent. The ozone alert can cause many respiatory problems, heat stroke, and shortness of breath.
On Wednesday morning, I had the opportunity to interview Evansville residents Kenny Tenbarge and Mike Mohan about a special project they've put together called Soldiers in Stone. This non-profit operation looks to raise money for different veteran's organizations and is quite an undertaking. The idea is to replace every brick in the sidewalk on Riverside Drive overlooking Dress Plaza with an engraved brick honoring a local vet that has been purchased by someone in the tri-state. That's right...every...single...brick.
The annual Muscular Dystrophy Summer Camp is coming up and we need your help to make sure the kids have everything they need to enjoy the experience.
