Who hasn’t wanted to be a hero at one time in their life?  As a dreamer, I still have those moments. To have the chance to save a person would give me an unimaginable level of purpose. As a super hero fan, I am drawn toward those characters with which I identify.  I'm not saying I’m extraordinary, but certain facinating traits of these characters appeal to me. These are my top five favorite superheroes and how they relate to me.

5. The Thing

This man turned hero is made of scaly orange rock material. He has super human strength and durability. I am drawn to his strength and how he deals with personal problems  because of his deformed phase.   Like the characters of Frankenstein and Beast from Beauty and the Beast, I relate to them because all are labeled as outcasts, yet possess great strength within. When I was younger I felt like I had trouble fitting in, but going through that has given me strength today.

4. Colossus

He is a member of the X-Men and has the ability to change his body into an organic steel-like material.  In this state he has superhuman strength and is impervious to damage. You can probably guess what I relate to in this character.  He is a strong guy and at will can have "tough skin" to protect himself from people or his environment.

3. The Incredible Hulk

One of the more recognizable superheroes, in a gamma radiation accident, Dr. Banner was turned into this huge green monster. In my opinion, he is the strongest superhero of all.  With unlimited strength, he is totally impervious to pain. He’s conflicted, knowing what he is capable of, but almost fearful at the same time. His rage makes his character passionate and emotional and I relate to that.  A normal guy one minute, a superhuman ball of emotions the next.  That is me in a nut shell!

2. Batman - Bruce Wayne disguises himself as Batman to fight crime and avenge his murdered parents. Having no super powers, he uses his mind, training, and gadgets to protect his city and the general public, putting their safety first.  In this I see myself. I have no real power, but will always use whatever I can to help those who need me. I always put loved ones before myself, if even to my fault, as some might say.

1. Spider-Man

Peter Parker is bitten by a radioactive spider and assumes spider-like abilities. Spider-Man is by far my favorite hero for many reasons. He tries to live a normal life while being conflicted between his heroic duties and responsibility to his personal relationships. He has real problems, yet tries not to let anyone see his worries. Personally and heroically, others come first; he comes second. He even defends those who look down on him and see him as a bad guy. He is a mild mannered young adult, but when he puts on his mask, attitude comes out… I can relate.
