-from Keith Todd, Kentucky Transportation Cabinet

A contractor for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet plans to restrict southbound traffic to one lane on the US 41 Twin Bridges at Henderson starting Thursday, February 2, 2017.

This work zone is in addition to the previously announced lane restrictions for guardrail upgrades on Tuesday and Wednesday.

This daytime lane restriction for southbound traffic on the US 41 Twin Bridges at Henderson will be in place weekdays between 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., CST, Monday through Friday. This southbound lane restriction will be in place around the clock on weekends from 9 p.m., CST, on Friday night through 5:30 a.m. the following Monday.

This work zone lane restriction for southbound traffic is to allow installation of a solar navigation lighting system on the southbound bridge.  It will be in place whenever weather allows for about 2 to 3 weeks on the southbound bridge.  Once work on the southbound bridge is nearing completion, we will announce a date for the contractor to move the work zone to the northbound bridge on a similar daytime and weekend schedule

Appropriate caution is required where equipment, flaggers, and other personnel are along the roadway in close proximity to traffic flow.

TEM Group is the prime contractor on this $600,864 solar navigation light upgrade project.  The target completion date is May 1, 2017.

This is among a number of projects on the US 41 Twin Bridges that have to be completed before the start of a major rehab along the US 41 Corridor.  The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) and Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) are planning a major 3-year rehabilitation project along the US 41 Corridor between the US 41 Twin Bridges and the I-69 Interchange at the south edge of Evansville scheduled to start in May of 2017.  This joint project includes a deck overlay driving surface on the southbound bridge with 2 lanes of travel maintained in each direction.  For more information go to: http://www.in.gov/indot/3459.htm

The US 41 Twin Bridges, also known as the Bi-State Viet Nam Gold Star Memorial Bridges, are located at US 41 mile point 19.649 about a mile south of the Kentucky-Indiana State Line.  They carry approximately 40,000 vehicles per day across the Ohio River between Henderson, KY, and Evansville, IN.

The bridges are located about a mile downstream from the confluence of the Green River and the Ohio River at Ohio River navigation mile point 786.8.  The Twin Bridges have a total length of 5, 393.6 ft. with a 720 ft. main navigation span.  The bridge superstructure is a Warren cantilevered through-truss design.

The northbound bridge was opened to traffic on July 4, 1932.  The southbound bridge was opened to traffic on December 16, 1965.
