Entertainment's fixation on 18th- and 19th-century American slavery horrors is getting old, according to one of hip-hop's most identifiable voices.

In an Instagram video posted yesterday (May 30), Snoop Dogg called out The History Channel for their re-imagining of Roots, a miniseries that originally aired in 1977 and follows a man named Kunta Kinte who is sold into slavery. Snoop says that the new installment, which premiered last night, is mounting evidence that filmmakers cannot rid the notion that black characters are best when they are at a deficit. The rapper urged the industry to dream up more positive stories.

"No disrespect, but I can't watch no motherf------ more black movies where n----- getting dogged out — 12 Years a Slave, Roots, Underground, I can't watch none of that s---," he says in the clip below. "I'm sick of this s---."

Snoop insisted that "[the industry] just want to keeping showing the abuse we took hundreds and hundreds of years ago," adding, "They going to just keep beating that s--- into our heads about how they did us, huh?"

"Let's create our own s--- based on today, how we live and how we inspire people today," he insisted. "Black is what's real. F--- that old s---."

Roots, based on Alex Haley's novel of the same name, will air its remaining three episodes nightly until Thursday (June 2). Malachi Kirby, Forest Whitaker and Anna Paquin star in the update, while Laurence Fishburne narrates the story. The original production, which starred LeVar Burton, won nine Emmys, a Golden Globe award and a Peabody.
