Police pepper spray a 8-year old boy

Lakewood, CO- 8 year old Aiden, A student at a Denver school got very angry to a point that no one could calm him down. He barricaded himself in a class room and became extremely violent and began tearing the class room apart and screaming profanity to a point that students had to be evacuated and cops had to be called.
According to the Associated Press
Police found him with a foot-long piece of wood trim with a knife-like point in one hand and a cardboard box in the other.
Authorities claim that pepper spray was the only option so that the boy did not hurt himself or others.
I am curious on every ones thoughts on this story. Was this situation handled properly? Is 8-years old to young to be pepper sprayed?
