Justice League Action, the new animated Cartoon Network series featuring all your DC Comics favorites, premieres on December 16 with a special event. “Shazam Slam” is a four-part epic featuring Black Adam, Shazam, and Batman turning into a bat-monster. Sean Astin voices Shazam, by which I assume they mean the original Captain Marvel, since Astin is much better suited for a hero with the spirit of a child, than for a wise old wizard. In fact, Carl Reiner is credited as the Wizard, which probably means the character we used to call Shazam, since the old Justice Society villain the Wizard would be a stranger choice.

The really exciting thing is that this series features the return of Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill as Batman and the Joker, respectively. Although others have played those characters in recent years, Conroy and Hamill have been the voices many hear in their heads while reading Batman comics ever since the '90s animated series. And as a bonus, my second favorite voice of Batman, Brave and the Bold's Diedrich Bader, is also in the show as Booster Gold, a character he seems well-suited for.

Following the December 16 premiere, Justice League Action will run on Saturday mornings beginning December 24. You can check out a clip of "Shazam Slam" above while you wait for the premiere in a few weeks.

Here's the official word from Cartoon Network:

The world’s greatest DC Super Heroes are heading to Cartoon Network in the premiere of Justice League Action, an all-new animated series that will kick off with “Shazam Slam,” a four-part special event debuting, Friday, Dec. 16 at 6:00 p.m. (ET/PT).Produced by Warner Bros. Animation and based on iconic DC characters, Justice League Action will premiere new episodes Saturday mornings on Cartoon Network, beginning Dec. 24.

In "Shazam Slam," the villainous Black Adam battles Batman on the Rock of Eternity and unleashes a horde of Djinn determined to turn the Earth back to its pre-human, volcanic state.   Affected by the otherworldly powers of these primordial monsters, Batman becomes possessed and is turned into a giant flying Batmonster laying waste to the Hall of Justice, with only Superman capable of taking the fight to the Dark Knight. One by one, the Justice League - with the help of Shazam (voiced by Sean Astin) and The Wizard (voiced by Carl Reiner) - must hunt down and defeat each Djinn in order to yet again save the world from destruction.

Justice League Action marks the return of Kevin Conroy (Batman: The Animated Series), beloved by fans worldwide as one of the most iconic voices of Batman, to a weekly animated television series. The series will also deliver an all-star lineup of regular and guest cast voices, including Mark Hamill as Joker, James Woods as Lex Luthor, Diedrich Bader as Booster Gold and many more iconic DC Super Heroes and Super-Villains. Sam Register (Teen Titans Go!) serves as executive producer, with Butch Lukic (Justice League, Batman Beyond), Alan Burnett (Batman: The Animated Series) and Jim Krieg (Green Lantern: The Animated Series) as producers.
