A bill currently being proposed in the Indiana Senate signals a definite changing of the times where smoking around children is concerned.

State Senators Jim Merritt and Eddie Melton have introduced a bipartisan bill that would make smoking in a car with a child under six a crime punishable by a $1,000 fine.

A third offense within a 12-month period would result in a $10,000 fine.

Currently nine states have laws on the books that make it illegal to smoke with children in a car: Arkansas, California, Louisiana, Maine, Oregon, *Puerto Rico, Utah, Vermont, and Virginia.
