French Lick may have one of the craziest weirdest names in the country, but have you ever thought about how it got its name?

We did some research and found that most likely it got its name from the French Traders who settled there because of the minerals and salt licks in the area.

According to www.monon.org "There are a number of colorful stories concerning the origin of the town’s name but the most widely-accepted theory came from its early settlers. French Lick got its name from the early French settlers and the “mineral licks.” French traders came to the area and discovered the mineral springs bubbling from the ground in the vicinity of what is now French Lick."

Wikipedia claims French Lick is the 2nd name the area had; "French Lick was originally a French trading post built near a spring and salt lick. A fortified ranger post was established near the springs in 1811. On Johnson's 1837 map of Indiana, the community was known as Salt Spring. The town was founded in 1857"

Well, we may never know how French Lick got its name, but we do know it makes us giggle every time we say it!
