I had the pleasure of visiting my extended family in Eisenstein, Germany, several years ago. My grandfather left Germany when he was very young and moved to Park Falls, Wisconsin, when he was just a tot and my grandmother’s parents (who were also from Eisenstein) had moved to the same area before she was born.

Needless to say, the phrase, “You can always tell a German but you can’t tell him much,” has always stuck with me. I grew up eating potato dumplings, sauerkraut, dancing to Polka music and appreciating a good Lederhosen – when I visited family in Wisconsin. Owensboro, KY, is not known for their strong German heritage so when I moved to the Evansville area, I was pleasantly surprised by the culture here.

I even went so far as to win the coveted media Weenie Tossing Championship of Volksfest in 2008. I have been asked back this year to participate in the Olympic-type event. Being nine months pregnant, I hope the weenies don’t bounce off the belly.
