There's a fun new app causing a stir on smartphones everywhere, giving people the chance to see how they'll look as a senior citizen, or even the opposite sex. So of course, I had to jump on the bandwagon because I'm a sheep, not a shepherd.

FaceApp debuted on the App Store in mid-January, and gives users the opportunity to add a variety of filters to their selfies including "Old," which adds a few layers of wrinkles and grey hair, "Young," that smooths the skin a bit and seems to enlarge the eyes in a creepy horror-movie-doll kind of way, as well as "Female" and "Male" which adds more feminine qualities to male selfies (longer hair, softer skin, etc.), and more masculine features to female selfies (shorter hair, rougher skin, and so on).

Here's how it sees me in my twilight and toddler years, along with how I'd appear if I were female.

You would think the "Young" filter would make me look more like I did when I was actually younger, but compared to this photo of me in 2nd grade, it's not terribly close.

Granted, this app is taking my current face and trying to make it more youthful, so the fact the resemblance is off isn't surprising. To be perfectly frank, I think I make a better looking kid now than I did back then (side note: the gap in between the front two teeth is still there. Not quite as pronounced, but still there nonetheless.).

As for the "Old" filter, if this is indeed how I end up looking in the next 20 or so years, I'd be fine with that. What's amazing about how this app makes me look, is how closely I resemble my dad. That's not a bad thing by any means. Dad has aged pretty well. But the fact this app has somehow managed to really nail the similarity is a little creepy.

Now then, let's talk about me as a woman. When Gavin tried this, his female doppelganger looks like someone I would have considered walking up to at a bar and striking up a conversation with before my crippling fear of being shot down kept me in my chair across the room.

I'm not saying I'm unattractive (it's what on the inside that counts, right?), nor am I saying looks are everything (so please keep your hate mail to yourself). Female me just looks a little — homely.

I feel like there's no way to say this without angering someone, but here goes anyway — if I were female me (trippy!) I think letting my hair down and touching up with just a little makeup wouldn't hurt.

(Side note: I re-wrote that last paragraph about five times trying to figure out the best way to word it so I wouldn't be burned at the stake on social media. Success? Doubtful.)

The FaceApp is a free download at both the App Store and Google Play, and offers a in-app upgrade to the "Pro Version" for $3.99 that removes ads and photo watermarks, as well as improves the face selection and processing. It's a fun little app, but after you've used it once and played with all the features, there's really nothing else to see. Chances are, I'll goof around with it for a couple of days (if even that long), then delete it.
