According to data collected by a website called Neighborhood Scout, which uses data collected from a number of sources including the FBI database, Evansville is more dangerous than 96% of the rest of the country and 98% of the state of Indiana. Based on their data, Neighborhood Scout claims that a person has a 1 in 18 chance of becoming a victim.

With a crime rate of 56 per one thousand residents, Evansville has one of the highest crime rates in America compared to all communities of all sizes - from the smallest towns to the very largest cities. One's chance of becoming a victim of either violent or property crime here is one in 18. Within Indiana, more than 98% of the communities have a lower crime rate than Evansville.

Evansville really doesn't seem to be fairing well at all.

...compared to places with a similar population, it fares badly. Few other communities of this size have a crime rate as high as Evansville.

It seems that when you break it down with violent crime and property crime, things don't look any less bleak. According to Neighborhood Scout, you have a 1 in 157 chance of becoming a victim of a violent crime including rape, murder, aggravated assault and armed robbery.

For Evansville, we found that the violent crime rate is one of the highest in the nation, across communities of all sizes (both large and small)...  According to NeighborhoodScout's analysis of FBI reported crime data, your chance of becoming a victim of one of these crimes in Evansville is one in 157.

And it is worse for property crime. Your chance of being a victim to burglary, car theft or arson is 1 in 20!

Property crimes that are tracked for this analysis are burglary, larceny over fifty dollars, motor vehicle theft, and arson. In Evansville, your chance of becoming a victim of a property crime is one in 20, which is a rate of 49 per one thousand population.

It is a scary reality to see statistically that the city we love isn't safe but I guess the real question is what do we do about it? How do we prevent ourselves from becoming just another victim? Just another statistic? What can we do to help law enforcement crack down on crime? We can start with a "See something, say something" mentality. Law enforcement has made it easy to remain anonymous when making a tip about a crime. You can use the We Tip hotline by calling 1-800-78-CRIME.
