According topatryangolf.com, the average speed of a golf ball when it hits the ground is 47.5 mph. I don't know the formula to calculate the force that generates, but I can promise you that it hurts when it hits you on the side of the head.

Ask Chris Logan of West Chester, PA how it feels. On July 4th, 2010 Chris was standing in the rough of Aronimink Golf Club just outside Philadelphia watching the AT&T National golf tournament with other spectators when he was struck in the head by an errant golf shot hit by PGA golfer Sean O'Hair. Little did Chris know as he lay on the ground in pain, but that shot may have saved his life.

In a odd twist of fate, when Chris was examined by doctors to check for a possible concussion, they discovered a lump just below his throat. After a trip to his family doctor for further testing, it was discovered the lump was a malignant tumor on his thyroid gland that required immediate attention.

Fast forward to nearly one year later, Chris is cancer free and had the opportunity to meet O'Hair in person to thank him for a shot that at the time I'm sure O'Hair wished had never happened.

Even though there's no way of knowing whether or not Chris would have eventually found out about the tumor had this incident never happened, it's one of those instances where you have to think a higher power was involved whether you want to call that higher power God, destiny, or fate. I'm sure at this point, Chris doesn't care what you call it, he's just glad it happened.
