Recently the Indiana Attorney General, Greg Zoeller, provided information regarding calls from area codes from whence many scams originate.  Your BBB® also wants you to be aware of calls from these area codes. If you see a number or receive a voicemail message with area codes of 473, 809, 284, 649 and 876, don’t answer the phone, and don’t return calls unless you have friends or relatives in those areas.

One type of scam that is generated from these area codes use premium services which will charge their victims up to $20.00 for the first minute.  The objective is to keep you on the line for as long as possible to rack up higher charges.

Attorney General Zoeller advises not to pick up your phone when you see numbers with area codes of 000 or 123 either.  He also advises not to answer calls from the 202 area, which is the area code for Washington, D.C. unless you’re expecting calls from a government agency.  As we’ve noted in other posts, government agencies, like the Department of the Treasury or the IRS won’t call you regarding tax issues, but you’ll receive written correspondence via mail from them.
