I’m not one of those people that has an emergency generator under a tarp in my back yard. I don’t stock MREs in my basement or have shelves of canned food that I rotate regularly. Honestly, I wish I were, because you never know what might go wrong.

But there is one preparedness step I’m a stickler about, and that’s making sure I carry an emergency car kit every time I head out on a road trip or camping trip. It's also important to keep all these things close at hand if you are hunting or fishing in a secluded area.

An emergency kit can be as minimal or as massive as you like, but if you hit a hitch on your drive, you’ll be glad if you have a few basics.

This is what I carry, packed into a handy waterproof box:

  • Phone charger
  • Extra water
  • Flashlight
  • Small knife
  • Gloves
  • Oil
  • Jumper cables
  • Garbage bag
  • Duck tape
  • First Aid kit

I also make sure I have twice the snacks I would need for the trip, and I pack a little more cash than I normally would.

There’s no way to be ready for everything – I’m in trouble if the zombies show up, for instance – but this little kit does make me feel a little safer on the road.
