The Passing of Preteen, Brody Lofton, Leaves Newburgh Community Heartbroken

On Friday night, I noticed several of my friends and family were reacting to the photo of a preteen boy with big blue eyes next to the word “Obituary.” I didn’t immediately recognize the young man but I clicked. As a mom, my heart aches when I see any child whose life was cut short.

How Likely is a Major Earthquake in the Ohio River Valley?

This morning, I noticed that the National Weather Service in Paducah, KY, posted that a 3.5 magnitude earthquake occurred at 8:45 AM this morning 2.3 miles east of Point Pleasant, MO or 29.2 miles south of Sikeston, MO. This came only weeks after a 6.1-magnitude earthquake hit central Italy and days after North Korea detonated a nuclear warhead causing a 5.3 magnitude earthquake. It made me wonder, how likely are we to have an earthquake here in the Ohio River Valley which rests in the heart of the New Madrid Seismic Zone which covers parts of seven American states: Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Arkansas, Kentucky, Tennessee, Oklahoma, and Mississippi.

‘The NeverEnding Story’ to Be Shown in Theaters on Sept 7 [List of Locations]

Welp, there's my childhood all wrapped up into a magical book, a Luck Dragon, and the Childlike Empress. The Neverending Story was a big part of my never-ending summers. My best friend, Patrick and I would watch it at least once a week on VHS. When I saw that it was going to be back in theaters, my childhood self just about exploded.

The Rob and Kat’s Co-Worker Issues #FridayFlashback 90s Challenge

This past week, The Rob and Kat had a "Nineties-off," or something along those lines. Well, I was born in the Eighties but I consider myself a child of the Nineties. Most of my high school glory days were spent in the late Nineties. And, let's face it - the best music, clothing, and TV came out of the Nineties. So, I decided that today I would go all out Nineties. No, I'm not seeing how many times I can put "Nineties" in one blog. (Seriously, can anyone beat ten Nineties?) No, I'm issuing a challenge to Rob, Kat, and pretty much everyone else in the tri-state. Break out your butterfly hair clips, baby-doll dresses, chunky shoes, jorts and chokers this FRIDAY. We are going all NINETIES baby!

Perry Heights Middle School Needs Sponsors For Achieve Reading Program

Achieve 3000 is a student-centered interactive reading program that identifies each student’s reading (Lexile) level and offers them a tremendous variety of high-interest, non-fiction articles.  The articles are a foundation on which we can increase each student’s fluency, comprehension, and reading ability. In addition, the students write about the articles and are encouraged to voice their opinions about many current events.  Another plus that the students really enjoy is that they compete with others in their school, state, and nationally to win a variety of prizes.  The best part is, it doesn’t matter if they are the top reader or a struggling reader, just that they put in the most effort!  Each year, our 6th graders and a few of our 7th and 8th graders are furnished with an Achieve “license” by the EVSC.  Typically, nearly all of those students see excellent growth in their reading ability, some growing as much as four grade levels.
