With the winter months approaching (and the real possibility of being stuck inside), I have some board game recommendations to help keep you occupied!

Board games have come a long way since the days of Candy Land and Hungry Hungry Hippos. They are now some of the most complex and fun activities you can do. Here are 5 board games I think you'll enjoy playing!

1. Catan

Alright, this is more of a formality than anything. Catan is a game in which you trade resources in order to build roads and settlements. By doing this, you earn victory points. You can work together with other players or completely screw them over. This game is the reason that most friendships fall apart. While not my favorite game on the list, it's a good introduction into more complex board games.

2. Betrayal at House on the Hill

I love this game. The premise is you are sent in to investigate a house. As you explore the house you start to notice some spooky things. While many games are straight forward with what you need to do, Betrayal completely flips that: In the middle of the game, the entire narrative shifts which has one player "betraying" the rest of the group and trying to complete a certain task. Meanwhile, the other players try to stop them for winning. There are dozens of scenarios to play out which means lots of replay value.

3. King of Tokyo

If you've ever wanted to feel like Godzilla or have a board game version of the video game Rampage, this is for you. In this game, you are a monster and your goal is to beat up all of the other monsters while they also try to beat you up. This is definitely the simplest of the games on the list to learn and play. It's also probably the most pure fun you can have. If you've got kids, this is the game you want to get.

4: Arkham Horror

Ok, so remember when I said that King of Tokyo was the easiest game to learn? Think the opposite for Arkham Horror. Also, the Arkham referenced has nothing to do with Batman. This game is dense but also a ton of fun, especially if you are into the lore of H.P. Lovecraft. This game could be called "I don't know what I've done to deserve this, but bad stuff keeps happening." In the game, you'll battle monsters, demons, and all sorts of other supernatural entities, all while trying to close portals. This game is also one of the longer games on the list so you'll be occupied for a while.

5. Dungeons and Dragons

Upon reading this, it might trigger an older relative to start praying for you. Although not a traditional board game, Dungeons and Dragons is the absolute best. What has mostly been known as a nerd game, D&D has re-entered the mainstream after appearing on several TV shows, most notably this summer's huge hit Stranger Things.  The possibilities of what you can do in this game are only constrained to what you can imagine. I have spent many nights over the past 3 years sitting around a table and going on adventures. Out of all the games listed, you will laugh the most while playing this one. Do yourself a favor and start using your imagination!

Those are my recommendations. Anything I missed?
