There are words in the English language that are a little more complicated to pronounce. They just don't follow the rules of linguistics. Squirrel is one of those words, and when 10 Germans try to pronounce it, hilarity ensues!

Squirrel is spelled as though it has 2 syllables, yet when we pronounce it somehow that second syllable seems to vanish entirely. Rather than skwer-rul most of us pronounce it skwerl. When you show the word to a bunch of Germans, it gets a little funny! For the record, I doubt that most English speaking folks could pronounce the German word for squirrel: eichhörnchen. I'd give you the phonetic pronunciation on that, but I can't.
